While the region was historically famous for Great White Shark encounters, the majority of sharks seen on cage diving trips today are Bronze Whaler sharks (also known as Copper sharks). These impressive sharks can grow up to 3.5 meters in length and are powerful, fast swimmers that often approach the boat in groups.
During peak months it is common to see multiple Bronze Whaler sharks at the same time, sometimes with 10 to 20 sharks circling the boat, creating an unforgettable underwater viewing experience.
Great White Shark Sightings
Although sightings are less frequent than in previous years, Great White Sharks are still occasionally seen in the area. These iconic predators remain one of the ocean’s most fascinating animals and encountering one during your trip is always a highlight.
The best time of year to potentially see Great White Sharks in Gansbaai is between April and November, when ocean conditions and food sources make sightings more likely.
Bronze Whaler Shark Season
The peak season for Bronze Whaler sharks runs from September to April, when warmer water temperatures attract larger numbers of these sharks to the area.
Because Bronze Whalers often arrive in groups, guests frequently experience continuous shark activity around the cage and boat, making this period one of the most exciting times of the year for shark cage diving.
The Shark Cage Diving Experience
Shark cage diving takes place close to Geyser Rock near Gansbaai and Seal Island in False Bay, both home to colonies of approximately 60,000 Cape Fur Seals. These seal colonies have historically made the region one of the most famous shark habitats in the world.
The islands are located only 15 to 20 minutes by boat from the harbour, allowing guests to reach the dive site quickly.
To attract sharks closer to the boat, operators use chum in the water, but feeding sharks is strictly prohibited. Sharks are not trained or conditioned; they remain completely wild animals.
Because of this, waiting times can vary from a few minutes to an hour or more, depending on ocean conditions and natural shark movement.
No Diving Experience Required
One of the best things about shark cage diving in Gansbaai is that no scuba diving experience is needed.
Participants simply hold their breath for a few seconds when a shark swims past the cage. The cage design allows enough space to keep your head above the water while waiting for sharks to approach.
When sea conditions are good, the cage is secured directly to the side of the boat with easy entry and exit, and many guests find that viewing sharks from the boat can be just as exciting as being in the cage.
Other Marine Life You May See

- Southern Right Whales and Humpback Whales during whale season
- Up to 20 species of seabirds
Every trip is unique, making shark cage diving one of the most exciting ocean wildlife experiences near Cape Town.
